Western Union Stablecoin Plan Targets SWIFT With 3 Key Moves
Western Union is set to launch a stablecoin to settle global transactions without SWIFT, marking a major shift in cross-border payments. The company confirmed during its April 24, 2026 earnings call that it will roll out a U.S. dollar-backed token, USDPT, in May 2026. The initiative is designed to improve settlement speed, reduce costs, and modernize its global payment infrastructure by leveraging blockchain technology instead of traditional banking rails.
Western Union Stablecoin to Replace SWIFT Settlement System
The Western Union stablecoin; USDPT will initially function as an internal settlement tool rather than a consumer-facing product. Instead of relying on the SWIFT network, the company will use blockchain rails to process transactions between its global agents.
Built on the Solana blockchain and issued by Anchorage Digital Bank, USDPT is designed for faster, near-instant settlement compared to the multi-day delays typical of traditional correspondent banking systems.
Executives noted that the shift is less about replacing remittances and more about upgrading the backend infrastructure that powers global money transfers. By moving settlement on-chain, Western Union aims to enable 24/7 transactions even during banking holidays while improving liquidity efficiency.
Digital Asset Network Expands Stablecoin Utility
Alongside the launch, Western Union is introducing a Digital Asset Network (DAN) to integrate stablecoins into its existing ecosystem. This network will connect crypto wallets, financial institutions, and the company’s vast retail infrastructure, allowing seamless conversion between digital assets and fiat currencies.
The company also plans to roll out a “Stable Card” later in 2026, enabling users to spend stablecoin balances globally. This layered approach signals a broader push into digital finance beyond simple remittance services.
Industry analysts say this hybrid model combining blockchain efficiency with Western Union’s physical network could redefine how cross-border payments are executed at scale.
The move positions Western Union as a direct competitor to both SWIFT and emerging stablecoin payment networks. It could accelerate institutional adoption of blockchain for settlement and pressure traditional banking systems to innovate.
If successful, USDPT may become a blueprint for other remittance giants exploring stablecoins. Expansion into more countries and partnerships will be key to scaling its impact.
Experts view the initiative as a pivotal moment for financial infrastructure. While promising faster and cheaper settlements, they caution that regulatory compliance and interoperability will determine long-term success.
