AMC Theaters CEO Adam Aron announced on Wednesday that the chain would now accept Dogecoin payments for digital gift cards via BitPay Wallet.
The Dogecoin community, which is known for its enthusiasm for adoption campaigns, took to Twitter in droves to support the asset’s inclusion in the theatre’s payment options.
Users can now buy up to $200 worth of digital gift cards per day, thanks to their success. These cards can then be redeemed by moviegoers in theatres all over the country.
Aron was taken aback by the widespread attention, citing over 6 million views and 140,000 votes on his post, which included notable Doge fans Elon Musk and Mark Cuban. He also claimed that the viral tweet was his “most retweeted, reacted to, and liked tweet ever.”
By the end of 2021, AMC Entertainment has stated that it will accept four additional cryptocurrency assets: Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and Bitcoin Cash (BCH).
The organization has 620 cinemas across the United States and 358 theatres across Europe, according to data from October 2020.
Cryptocurrencies are emerging in the mainstream consciousness as liberating alternatives to traditional fiat currencies, and a new wave of public venues is transitioning their technological infrastructure to meet this demand.
Major Cineplex Group, Thailand’s largest movie theatre operator, was launching a nation-first inaugurate crypto initiative in March 2021, according to Cointelegraph. The project would allow moviegoers to purchase tickets and passes using established digital assets such as Bitcoin.
