Twitter and NFTs have been friends for a long time. Since the introduction of non-fungible tokens, artists have utilized social media to showcase their work, and crypto collectors brag about their recent purchases.
Critics of the new technology have used Twitter to express their concerns about the environmental impact of NFTs, digital plagiarism, and other issues, all in 280 characters or fewer.
With a new feature that allows paying users on the site to set up an NFT profile picture, crypto and Twitter have officially consummated their union.
The concept isn’t novel in and of itself: NFT owners frequently utilize their unique digital assets as profile pictures, especially avatars (see TV host and comedian Jimmy Fallon’s Bored Ape staring at us disinterestedly from his Twitter page, for example).
Users may now link their cryptocurrency wallets to their Twitter accounts, and whatever NFT they want to display in their profile will take on a unique hexagonal form that separates it from the circular emblem designated for non-blockchain-based graphics.
The business launched the launch with a goofy promotional film that reminded me of Gushers candy advertisements from the 1990s, in which real-life Twitter users’ heads were replaced with well-known NFT avatars.
How to use an NFT as a Twitter profile picture
To get started, you’ll need to be a paid Twitter Blue subscriber in the United States, which costs $3 per month.
To sign up, go to Twitter’s side menu and select the feature. In addition to the United States, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand offer the service.
Because the NFT feature is currently only available on iOS, you’ll need to access Twitter on an iPhone once you’ve signed up for Twitter Blue.
NFT profile pictures will be available on Android and the web at a later date, according to the company.
Go to your profile (which you can access from the side menu) in the Twitter app, and you should see a notification asking you to change your profile picture to an NFT.
You can get the notification by visiting a profile of someone who has previously used an NFT in this manner. Now go ahead and perform the following:
- Select Choose NFT, then Connect My Wallet.
- Choose either MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, or Rainbow to store your NFTs (if your wallet isn’t available, you won’t be able to upload your NFT).
- You’ll be taken to your wallet, where you’ll be prompted to connect it to Twitter.
- After you’ve made the connection, you should be able to see your gallery of NFTs.
- Select an NFT and resize it as necessary.
- To make the NFT your profile photo, tap Done.
Your profile picture will now be in the shape of a hexagon, signaling to others that you own a confirmed NFT.
On Twitter, you can see other people’s NFTs
If you find someone else with an NFT in the hexagonal shape as their profile photo, tap on their profile picture and then click View NFT details to learn more about their NFT. The following is what you’ll be able to see:
- OpenSea or any other NFT marketplace verification.
- Creator of NFT.
- Owner of the NFT at the moment.
- A collection of NFTs, as well as a summary.
- Rare traits, for example, are NFT properties.
- Contract address, blockchain, token ID, and token standard are all NFT details.
