Yield Guild Games (YGG) has raised $1.45 million to aid those affected by Typhoon Odette, which hit the Philippines on December 16, with approximately $1 million already distributed to purchase essential goods like medicines, power generators, and canned food for those in need.
The funds were used to purchase necessary items including medicines, power generators, and canned food, which were then distributed to impacted communities by the Philippine Army and Navy and non-profit organizations.
According to a spokesman from YGG, around $458,000 worth of crypto and tokens have been given to the relief fund, but they have yet to be converted to fiat currency for deployment.
The aid operation was announced by the Filipino section of the play-to-earn gaming guild “YGG Pilipinas” a day after Typhoon Odette slammed the nation, and it quickly raised $110,000 in a variety of crypto tokens including SLP, AXS, ETH, WETH, and USDC by the end of the day.
YGG Pilipinas led the fundraiser
The effort was led by YGG Pilipinas Country Manager Luis Buenaventura. He told Cointelegraph that the Philippines makes up the majority of the YGG group, therefore Odette was especially dear to them.
“We’re Filipino-led; many of the senior staff reside here in the Philippines and indeed the largest portion of the global play-to-earn community is based here, which is why so many of the play-to-earn projects came out to contribute to the cause when they saw the extent of the typhoon damage.”
“We’re Filipino-led; many of our top staff live here in the Philippines, as does the majority of the worldwide play-to-earn community, which is why so many of the play-to-earn projects came out to help when they witnessed the scale of the typhoon destruction.”
“Our community is as essential to us as our core team, and many of them were either pushed from their homes or have been living without running water or power for a month now,” he said, adding that many staff members were living in typhoon-ravaged areas.
Web3 Community contributed to the fundraising
Apart from the donations raised by the YGG community, a number of other members of the Web3 community also contributed. Axie Infinity, an NFT play-to-earn game, was co-founded by myself. On Christmas Day, Jeffrey “Jihoz” Zirlin donated 1,000 AXS ($55,400) to the relief fund. He stated, “
“As we work together to help our brothers and sisters in the Philippines recover and rebuild, we remember that this is what our community is about.”
“As we work together to help our Filipino brothers and sisters recover and rebuild, we realize what our community is all about.”
Gabby Dizon, a co-founder of YGG, said the relief effort demonstrated the Web3 gaming community’s strength and solidarity. “This is our proof that we’re more than simply a gaming community,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, users of the DeFi Kingdoms (DFK) play-to-earn game decided to donate a total of $500,000, with the development team contributing another $250,000.
Because some of the people affected by Odette required cash more quickly than relief materials, YGG developed the “Crypto Ayuda” humanitarian mission to deliver cash to those who required immediate support.
According to recent estimates, Typhoon Odette impacted over 9 million people, with nearly 325,000 people still evacuated. Over 50,000 dwellings and $260 million worth of agricultural supplies were destroyed by the Typhoon .
