Politicians wanting to receive their salary in Bitcoin notwithstanding the price volatility is now the next trend on board. Following in the footsteps of the NYC Mayor, the Belgian MP has also vowed to receive all his salary for the year in Bitcoin.
Christophe De Beukelaer, a Brussels Member of Parliament, has opted to convert his pay to BTC, following the lead of two US mayors. He will, however, take it a step further by investing all of his 2022 earnings in the principal cryptocurrency.
According to recent media reports, Christophe De Beukelaer, a Brussels deputy, has committed to convert his entire 2022 salary (5,500 euros per month) into bitcoin, which he has referred to as “digital gold.”
Following cooperation with Bit4You, a Belgian cryptocurrency startup, he will be allowed to do so.
“Through this action, I want to demonstrate my confidence in a financial world in the making, a more transparent financial world, more accessible in the sense that it is decentralized. It is not run by a few people who decide to print more or less banknotes without any parliamentary control or debate.” – he commented.
He also discussed some of the most concerning aspects of today’s financial landscape, such as central banks‘ excessive fiat currency issuance and resultant inflation.
He also pushed his home nation, Belgium, to be more active in adopting cryptocurrencies and the technology that underpins them, blockchain, saying he doesn’t want the country to “miss the train.”
De Beukelaer claims he will be the first politician in Europe to convert his salary to BTC. This, however, has previously been done on the other side of the Atlantic.
Miami’s pro-bitcoin mayor was the first to do so, according to CryptoPotato. Later, Eric Adams, the newly-elected mayor of New York City, went even further. He wants three checks to be converted to bitcoin (and ether).
