An increasing number of mayors around the United States have stated their desire to be compensated in bitcoin. The mayor of Miami has stated that he will receive his whole salary in bitcoin; two other mayors have stated that they will convert their salaries to bitcoin; and the mayor-elect of New York City has stated that he will receive his first three paychecks in bitcoin.

Mayors in the United States are increasingly requesting payment in bitcoin. At the time of writing, three mayors and one mayor-elect have stated that they will accept bitcoin as payment for their next paycheck. “I’m going to take my next paycheck 100 percent in bitcoin,” tweeted Francis Suarez, the mayor of Miami, Florida, on Tuesday.
In response to Suarez’s tweet, Eric Adams, the mayor-elect of New York City, tweeted that when he takes office as mayor of NYC, he will take his first three paychecks in bitcoin.
Following Adams’ tweet, Suarez stated in an interview with Fox Business that he will not only receive his next paycheck in bitcoin, but will also receive his whole salary in bitcoin. Miami’s mayor stated that the city’s Chief Information Officer (CIO) “was the first employee to actually take a percentage of his salary in bitcoin,” elaborating:
“I am going to be employee number two … I will be taking 100% of my salary in bitcoin”.
“We are not going to force it on anyone,” the mayor stated emphatically. “It will be entirely voluntary… We want our employees to have that option, but we’re not going to force it on them. We understand that such a decision is a personal one that they must make if they want to make it.”
Suarez was recently re-elected to his second term as mayor of Miami. He has been attempting to transform his city into the world’s crypto capital.
Two more mayors have expressed a desire to be paid in bitcoin.Mayor Scott Conger of Jackson, Tennessee, who is likewise attempting to turn his city into a bitcoin hotspot, tweeted on Thursday:
While state law prohibits the city of Jackson, TN, from paying me in bitcoin, I’ll follow the lead of [Miami Mayor] Francis Suarez & [NYC Mayor-elect] Eric Adams and instantly convert my next paycheck to bitcoin.
The mayor of Tampa, Florida, is another mayor who wants to be paid in bitcoin. Tampa is attempting to become a cryptocurrency hub, according to WTSP, a CBS-affiliated television station, and the city’s mayor wants to show that she is all in.
Mayor Jane Castor mentioned receiving her paychecks in bitcoin during the Bitcoin and Blockchain Summit in Tampa on Friday. Lauren Rozyla, a spokesperson for the mayor, then stated that the mayor has agreed to accept two BTC paychecks. She is, however, unsure of how it will transpire. “It’s possible she’ll be paid in conventional dollars and then instantly invest in bitcoin,” the representative said.
