Cardano Founder Meets Argentina President Javier Milei: Agenda?

In October, Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson is scheduled to meet with Argentina’s President Javier Milei to discuss the future of cryptocurrency economies.

The meeting, set for October 19 at the Tech Forum Argentina, will focus on blockchain’s potential to transform economic, political, and social systems globally, as well as the specific needs and values of Argentina, including central bank digital currency (CBDC) development and potential partnerships for economic recovery.

Hoskinson stated:

“We’ve had many discussions with his administration… if not then, within that time frame, we’ve been discussing with people that work with him and forum what blockchain’s future is going to look like. It’s not a Cardano-only conversation; there’s a whole family of technologies.”

In a recent interview, Hoskinson described President Milei as a “philosophical Austrian,” aligning his economic beliefs with the principles of the crypto community.

Hoskinson emphasized Milei’s advocacy for private institutions, free markets, and opposition to government-controlled money, drawing parallels to economists like Ludwig von Mises and Murray Rothbard.

“Milei shares a similar creed as those greats… his political philosophy really tallies with the ethos of the cryptocurrency industry,” said Hoskinson.

Cardano's Growing Presence in Argentina

Hoskinson’s upcoming visit marks a significant step for Cardano in Argentina, which has already shown openness to blockchain initiatives.

In June 2024, the Cardano Foundation partnered with Argentina to promote local blockchain initiatives.

Cardano’s relationship with Argentina traces back to its early development with AtixLabs, one of Cardano's first development partners, based in the country.

Hoskinson also pointed out Argentina's long-standing connection with Bitcoin, noting that BitPay developed its Copay wallet in the country as early as 2012.

President Milei has expressed his support for cryptocurrency, including Cardano. In May 2024, he shared a Cardano-themed message on his X (formerly Twitter) page and has endorsed Hoskinson’s work.

Cardano’s Governance Milestone at Tech Forum Argentina

President Milei has confirmed his attendance at Tech Forum Argentina, which is pivotal for Cardano as it progresses toward the Voltaire phase of its roadmap, focused on decentralized governance.

On September 1, Cardano underwent its first hard fork of the Voltaire era, introducing on-chain community governance.

The final stage of this governance, the Cardano Constitution, will be ratified by ADA holders in December 2024, further solidifying the platform’s decentralized nature.

While personally supporting a deflationary monetary policy and opposing token burning, Hoskinson welcomes debate within the Cardano community, emphasizing that inclusivity and discussion are central to on-chain governance.

“Discussion is the very reason behind on-chain governance; this is how ideas get refined, and systems evolve through inclusivity of every kind,” said Hoskinson.
