Rather than using investor funds for legitimate crypto-related business activities, the fraudster and his associates diverted most of the funds for personal enrichment—funding luxury travel, designer purchases, and renting lavish real estate. Meanwhile, returns to earlier investors were only paid out using money obtained from new victims, creating the illusion of profitability.

Fake Websites, Fake Wallets, Fake Promises

To build credibility, the scammer created slick marketing materials, professionally designed websites, and active social media campaigns. Victims were encouraged to buy into the ECoinPlus platform with promises of “guaranteed” returns of up to 25% in just a few weeks. The company also falsely claimed to operate a proprietary crypto trading algorithm and high-yield mining rigs. In reality, there was no such infrastructure.

At its peak, ECoinPlus alone reportedly raised more than $30 million from victims, while eEmpowerCoin raised an additional $10 million through a similar model. Victims who attempted to withdraw funds were often met with delay tactics or told that their withdrawals were “under review.” Eventually, both platforms went dark, wiping out user balances and deleting their digital footprint overnight.

Justice Department and FBI Step In

The U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI's Cyber Division led the multi-year investigation, which involved tracing wallet addresses, analyzing blockchain records, and seizing digital assets. Authorities credited cooperation from international financial intelligence units for tracking illicit crypto flows across borders.

During sentencing, the presiding judge called the crimes “calculated and cruel,” emphasizing the impact on working-class families who had lost life savings. Some victims testified in court, describing how the loss devastated their retirement plans or forced them into debt.

Restitution Ordered, But Recovery Uncertain

In addition to the prison term, the scammer has been ordered to pay restitution to the victims, although experts warn full recovery is unlikely. Most of the stolen funds were quickly converted into privacy coins or moved through laundering services, making traceability difficult.

The case adds to the growing list of crypto-related fraud prosecutions as regulators and law enforcement tighten scrutiny on digital asset markets. The DOJ reiterated its warning that “no amount of technological jargon can hide fraud” and encouraged potential investors to conduct thorough due diligence before investing in crypto projects promising guaranteed returns.

As the crypto industry matures, this sentencing sends a clear message: fraudulent schemes, even those hidden behind the promise of blockchain innovation, will face severe legal consequences.

A U.S. federal court has sentenced a cryptocurrency scammer to eight years in prison after he was found guilty of orchestrating two major crypto investment frauds, eEmpowerCoin and ECoinPlus, that defrauded investors of over $40 million.
