or software that interacts with the Ethereum network, allowing anyone to set up an Ethereum node and mine the cryptocurrency, which is currently based on a proof-of-work (<a href=\"https:\/\/coinscreed.com\/staging\/kadena-launches-100m-web3-grant-program.html\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"24627\">PoW<\/a>) consensus mechanism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The OpenEthereum team explained in a Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OpenEthereumOrg\/status\/1529147048758595585?s=20&t=qZmw6XVPp5ZOHvbYdae36g\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OpenEthereumOrg\/status\/1529147048758595585?s=20&t=qZmw6XVPp5ZOHvbYdae36g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thread<span class=\"wpil-link-icon\" title=\"Link goes to external site.\" style=\"margin: 0 0 0 5px;\"><svg width=\"24\" height=\"24\" style=\"height:16px; due to its age, it was the right time to end support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project was previously owned by blockchain infrastructure firm Parity Technologies before being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parity.io\/blog\/parity-ethereum-openethereum-dao\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.parity.io\/blog\/parity-ethereum-openethereum-dao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">transferred<span class=\"wpil-link-icon\" title=\"Link goes to external site.\" style=\"margin: 0 0 0 5px;\"><svg width=\"24\" height=\"24\" style=\"height:16px; width:16px; fill:#000000; stroke:#000000; display:inline-block;\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\" version=\"1.1\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" xmlns:svg=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><use href=\"#wpil-svg-outbound-7-icon-path\"><\/use><\/svg><\/span><\/a> to the OpenEthereum decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) in December 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parity stated at the time that they wanted to ensure the codebase is &#8220;maintained and lives on for as long as the community finds it useful.&#8221; According to OpenEthereum:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;The usefulness has run its course, and we look forward to the next phase of clean, green, and massively scalable blockchain infrastructure.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The OpenEthereum team stated that &#8220;well documented&#8221; clients were required to &#8220;navigate the upcoming Merge and successful transition to proof-of-stake (PoS),&#8221; directing users to switch to other providers such as Nethermind or Erigon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Merge is the name given to the planned Ethereum blockchain upgrade that will combine the existing proof-of-stake Beacon Chain, which was launched in December 2020, with the current proof-of-work main net, which validates transactions on the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since it was first proposed in 2016, the planned upgrade has experienced constant delays, with an initial deployment date of 2019.
