Jacon Osinachi recalls the adventure of instructing himself to design the logo of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) on Microsoft Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a yearning author, he would go to digital cafes to compose sonnets and short stories. Composing compositions for significant stretches caused fatigue, so he would mess with the product's drawing apparatuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was around 2005 in Aba, a crude city in southeastern Nigeria where he was brought up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over fifteen years after the fact, those investigations are yielding a worldwide standing, unfamiliar money income and an agreeable life. Osinachi currently draws more perplexing things on Microsoft Word, this time inside the mood of his 20-by-20ft room in a duplex in Lagos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aside from the battery-powered pencils he utilizes on his touchscreen HP PC, Osinachi needn't bother with uncommon hardware or modules to draw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He regularly starts at 9 am and completes each piece in a day. There is a guitar by his wooden table, to give discontinuous unwinding. Behind the table is a gigantic bed and teddy bear, for when he needs to rest his back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subsequent to drawing, he changes over the Word archive to a pdf record, at that point to a jpeg or png picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He distributes the picture on sites where purchasers bid in Ether, the digital currency second to Bitcoin in prominence, for the advantage of claiming an Osinachi. That makes the 29-year-old one of Nigeria's and Africa's driving lights in the current flood of crypto workmanship and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NFTs are unique digital items<\/strong> \u2013 images, music, videos, tweets\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n <\/g>\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n <\/clipPath>\r\n <\/defs><\/svg><\/span><\/a>, works of journalism<\/use><\/svg><\/span><\/a>, real estate \u2013 traded on the internet between creators and collectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the case of art, a creator uploads the image on websites like Nifty Gateway, SuperRare, OpenSea (which has received venture capital investment<\/use><\/svg><\/span><\/a> from Andreessen Horowitz) or similar marketplaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through a process called minting, the blockchain technology which powers the marketplace assigns a unique identity (a digital token) to the art and creates a contract that cannot be changed by anyone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depending on the platform, creators can decide to mint only one edition of the art or a number of limited editions. One artwork can be minted in different states \u2013 as still images, as animations, as silhouettes. Whatever the case, each edition is a unique NFT. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the art minted, anyone on the internet can access the marketplace to place a bid and buy the art as an NFT. Secondary sales are another source of income. Artists get paid when those who bought their art sell it to other collectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last Sunday,\u00a0Osinachi\u2019s\u00a0Mirror Mirror<\/em><\/use><\/svg><\/span><\/a>and\u00a0Am I Pretty<\/em><\/use><\/svg><\/span><\/a>sold on SuperRare for 9 ETH and 13.2 ETH respectively \u2013 $16,227 and $23,633 as at when the bids ended. The most expensive yet?\u00a0This<\/use><\/svg><\/span><\/a>\u00a0sold nine days ago (also on SuperRare) for 20 ETH which was $35,919.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The global NFT market has taken off at an alarming rate. Last week, an artist known as Beeple sold an NFT for $69 million<\/use><\/svg><\/span><\/a>. CryptoPunks, which are basically pixelated icons, are selling for up to $1 million<\/use><\/svg><\/span><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A plot of land on\u00a0Decentraland<\/use><\/svg><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(one of a handful of virtual real estate realms called\u00a0metaverses<\/em>) costs up to $80,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much of this unreal (or surreal, depending on your ontological persuasion) world is transpiring in developed countries. NFTs are not cheap, and so the wave is highest where individuals are rich enough to splurge ridiculous amounts on virtual art. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But creators like Osinachi show that Africa can take advantage of this emerging technology. For those willing to dive into the rabbit hole, NFTs present new wells of financial independence and global influence to be tapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometime in the second half of 2016<\/strong>, after completing Nigeria\u2019s compulsory national service scheme and not finding work, Osinachi started emailing art galleries for a chance to display his drawings. Most responses were disheartening, except one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

ARTOJA<\/use><\/svg><\/span><\/a>, an online art marketplace, put Osinachi\u2019s portfolio on their website. Sales trickled in and the young artist felt some validation. But it was not enough to live off art alone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So he returned to the South East for a job at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (where he graduated) as an academic librarian, teaching and grading assignments by day and drawing after dusk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Osinachi set up Google alerts to receive articles on crypto art and visual art. This was late 2017 when blockchain-enabled marketplaces for selling digital art just began to emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t even fully understand the space before I went into it,\u201d he tells me, noting that he was not and still isn\u2019t sucked into bitcoin or cryptocurrency fandom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It would take two more years for Osinachi to get familiar with the dynamics of selling his art as NFT, just in time for the 2020 pandemic to accelerate the industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As galleries and art conferences suspended in-person meets, collectors moved online to feed their fantasies, thereby fueling unprecedented demand for digital art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can enjoy the saved version, sure. But in a crypto world, I can do so much more. You can buy a print of the Mona Lisa and pin it on your living room wall. But you can\u2019t auction that printed piece.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>NFT collector<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Michael Ugwu, who runs a Lagos-based music distribution company, became an ardent NFT collector last July. To him, the crypto art trend is an inevitable progression in tech disruption following Uber\u2019s and AirBnB\u2019s effects on transportation and hospitality.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ugwu bought his first crypto art from IzzyAlright, an American artist, for the ETH equivalent of $1,000. Since then, he\u2019s accumulated a portfolio directly from artists and from secondary sellers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why does Ugwu collect?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like owning an early Monet but in the crypto space,\u201d he tells me. \u201cIf crypto goes far, these early [artists] will be historic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lot of Ugwu\u2019s early purchases have shot up in value as the reputation of the creators grow. One edition of a Fewocious<\/use><\/svg><\/span><\/a> he bought is currently on the market for $180,000; will he sell his? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a long term investment and will be part of early NFT history, so no. But if I need to I will.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tell him that I have just right-clicked and saved his \u201cone of 10\u201d Fewocious piece from Nifty Gateway; why does he pay a ton of money for something so easy to save on a computer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He will rather take the risk now<\/strong> than stay on the sidelines \u2013 even if he fails in future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lesson from the Bitcoin doubt of the last decade is that it is better to be in the bubble when the barrier to entry is low than to be outside. And Ugwu is convinced that Africans need to get on the NFT train right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A piece by Osinachi is the only African NFT in his collection. That\u2019s partly because it\u2019s a better investment to buy the works of Western artists at the moment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he has met with Osinachi and both hope to collaborate on how best to spread the NFT wave across Africa. If NFT is the future of monetization for creators<\/use><\/svg><\/span><\/a> and of cryptocurrency adoption, African creators and investors should be involved in defining standards and terms of engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Osinachi\u2019s art sold for under 1ETH in December 2019, when the peak USD exchange rate was about $150 per ETH<\/use><\/svg><\/span><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, he sells in tens of ETHs with the cryptocurrency exchanging for thousands of dollars, enough to refer to himself as Africa\u2019s foremost cryptoartist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former librarian has come a long way, from designing logos in a remote town to selling his artworks to global audiences. He is one of over 50 artists whose works have been curated and exhibited at digital fairs by\u00a0Kate Vass Galerie<\/use><\/svg><\/span><\/a>, a studio in Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An agent of the studio says Kate Vass, the studio's owner, discovered Osinachi on Instagram and got keen on working with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His \u201ctalent, dedication and charisma obviously leave no doubt\u201d that he would be a successful artist and reflects the \u201cpotential that the NFT space can bring to African artists particularly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hopeful African NFT specialists have a few difficulties. For one, the expenses needed to mint on most stages (called gas charges) have risen strongly in the course of the most recent few months, from under $50 to more than $200, Osinachi says. Limitations on formal crypto exchanging Nigeria convolute the way toward purchasing Ether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Osinachi is additionally stressed over how the market right now is slanted to Western flavors and directs. He needs more assortment in the blend of makers and financial backers.
