The ambitious goal of Worldcoin is to build a digital identity infrastructure that uses biometric information, primarily iris scans, to verify and empower people. Worldcoin has established sign-up locations worldwide where anyone can have their faces scanned by a gleaming, sphere-shaped “orb.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People can have their faces scanned as they go close to the orb to collect biometric information, specifically for iris recognition. To create digital IDs that give consumers access to free bitcoin and services, this biometric data is exploited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the strategy used by Worldcoin may seem attractive to some, it creates serious privacy and ethical issues<\/a>. In a Reuters article, the French privacy authority CNIL said that the method “appears questionable, as do the conditions for storing biometric data.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to CNIL, it began looking into the matter and later learned that the German state body for the Bavarian region has control over it. Since then, the Bavarian authorities have led the investigation with assistance from CNIL. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, the UK's data authority declared that it would look into Worldcoin once launched.
