The island of Tuvalu said it plans to build a digital version of itself in order to preserve its history as it faces erasure due to climate change.
The island nation of Tuvalu in the South Pacific made the decision to use Web3 technology to ensure the future survival of its culture and society. Simon Kofe, the nation’s foreign minister, stated at the COP27 climate summit on November 15 that the nation is searching for alternate strategies to safeguard its cultural heritage from the effects of climate change, which include rising sea levels. Recreating itself in the metaverse is one of those methods.
“As our land disappears, we have no choice but to become the world’s first digital nation,” Kofe said in a video broadcast. Although Tuvalu could become the first sovereign nation to recreate itself in the metaverse, other countries have already begun their own explorations into the digital frontier.
Tuvalu will establish itself as the first digital version in the metaverse as it integrates itself into the metaverse. The land, ocean, and culture of the nation are its most valuable resources, and no matter what happens in the outside world, they will be kept safe in the cloud, according to Kofe:
“Islands like this one won’t survive rapid temperature increases, rising sea levels and droughts so we will recreate them virtually.”
We will virtually recreate islands like this one because they won’t survive rapid temperature increases, rising sea levels, and droughts. Other nations have already started their own forays into the digital frontier, despite the possibility that Tuvalu will be the first independent state to recreate itself there.
The Decentraland metaverse’s first embassy was established in 2021 by the Caribbean island nation of Barbados. Earlier this year, an Australian indigenous tribe also announced plans to establish an embassy in the metaverse.
Services in the metaverse are now being provided by other nations. In order to reach its younger users, Norway recently opened a branch of its federal tax offices in the metaverse. On virtual ground, the United Arab Emirates established a new ministry of economy headquarters. Digital counterparts have also been developed in major tech-forward cities like Santa Monica, California, and Seoul, South Korea.
