One South Korean university professor has taken the phrase “shitcoin” to a more literal level, implying that it is no longer only a term used to identify altcoin projects with questionable value propositions.
Cho Jae-weon of the National Institute of Science and Technology in Ulsan, South Korea, has developed an environmentally friendly toilet system that uses human waste to produce fertilizer and energy.
The toilet system includes a vacuum pump that funnels human waste into an underground tank to make biogas (methane), according to Jae-weon, an urban and environmental engineering professor.
According to reports, the professor’s project uses biogas to power a university building, gas stoves, and water heaters, among other things.
“If we think outside the box, faeces has valuable use in the production of energy and manure. The lecturer stated, “I have placed this importance in ecological circulation.”
Jae-project weon’s also included a digital currency component in the form of the Ggool native token, which is utilized to promote the use of the environmentally friendly toilet.
If students use the restroom, they receive 10 Ggool per day, which they may use on coffee, bananas, and even books on campus.
The professor added that an ordinary person’s faeces might produce up to 0.5 kilowatt-hour of electricity, which is enough to power an electric vehicle for up to three-quarters of a mile.
Crypto mining stakeholders are striving toward more environmentally friendly power sources, especially in light of recent policymaker criticism of the process’s alleged carbon impact.
According to the Bitcoin Mining Council, renewable energy sources are presently used in 56%t of Bitcoin mining.
