State senator Wendy Rogers has introduced a new bill which suggests Bitcoin be made a legal tender in Arizona, nothwithstanding the fact that the U.S. constitution does not grant states autonomy to a legal tender.
In the rare event that the legislation succeeds and the law takes effect, a measure presented in Arizona would make bitcoin legal cash in the state.
SB 1341 was introduced by Republican state senator Wendy Rogers. It aims to add bitcoin to the list of recognised legal tender, implying that the cryptocurrency will be accepted for the payment of debts, public charges, taxes, and other obligations.
Given that the United States Constitution prohibits individual states from creating their own legal cash, it’s unclear whether such a law could be implemented.
Before Gov. Doug Ducey, a Republican can sign the plan into law, it must pass the Arizona state senate and house.
Rogers, who was elected in early 2021, is a divisive character with ties to the anti-government Oath Keepers and respect for the conspiracy theory group QAnon.
Don Huffines, a Republican real estate developer and current governor candidate in Texas, recently stated that if elected, he will make bitcoin legal tender.
El Salvador became the first government in the world to make bitcoin legal tender alongside the US dollar in September, and it is still the only country in the world to do so.
