The Avalanche Foundation has announced a $40 million grant to assist developers in developing layer-1 blockchains on the Avalanche network.
“Retro9000” is a retroactive grant program that Avalanche introduced on September 26 to support its most recent enhancement, “Avalanche9000.” The upgrade provides developers a more cost-effective and straightforward method of generating L1 blockchains.
An Avalanche spokesperson informed Cointelegraph that the upgrade takes the network closer to its vision. “This is the most significant upgrade in Avalanche’s history, and it brings it close to the original vision outlined in the white paper,” the spokesperson stated.
The spokesperson further stated that the grant program is designed to “develop a robust pipeline of builders” who perceive new technical solutions as a means of distributing their product or business to a broader audience.
Creating critical infrastructure and layer 1 blockchain
Avalanche also stated in the announcement that the Retro9000 grant program will incentivize developers who construct L1 chains and essential developer infrastructure on the Avalanche9000 testnet.
Community ballots will guide retroactive grant distribution, with submissions ranked on a public leaderboard, as per Avalanche. Avalanche stated that the program motivates developers to engage in public development, secure the community’s backing, and test and deploy projects to receive incentives.
The Avalanche Foundation, an organization that promotes the adoption of the Avalanche blockchain network, provides funding for the grant program. According to the foundation, the objective of the grant program is to encourage the testing and implementation of foundational ecosystem building blocks on Avalanche.
According to Luigi D’Onorio DeMeo, the chief operating officer at Ava Labs, the Avalanche9000 enhancement is the result of years of development work.
“The Retro9000 incentivized testnet program aims to establish an L1 ecosystem and offer the most engaging and early incentives for developers to build their product by capitalizing on this opportunity,” DeMeo stated.
Supporting the enhancement of the Avalanche9000
The spokesperson emphasized that developers who wish to receive rewards from the grant program must also consider community ballots. They stated:
“The community is engaged to signal their preferences and vote on builders. While ultimately the discretion is for the Avalanche Foundation to reward builders who build Avalanche L1s and related tooling, the community votes and leaderboard are a key point of consideration.”
The Avalanche spokesperson also informed Cointelegraph that this is merely the initial of numerous initiatives that will be implemented to guarantee the success of the Avalanche 9000 upgrade.
