Axie Infinity’s discord was hacked and which made team remove the MEE6 bot that was the target.
Axie Infinity announced on Wednesday that the MEE6 bot on its main server had been compromised. According to the team, the hackers used the MEE6 bot to add permissions to a bogus Jiho account and make false announcements about a mint. MEE6 is a Discord bot that enables administrators to automatically assign and remove roles as well as send messages.
Many projects with the MEE6 bot installed on their servers experienced similar problems. RTFKT, PROOF/Moonbirds, PXN, Memeland, and Cool Cats, among others, reported compromised admin accounts.
MEE6 Discord Bot Compromised
According to Axie Infinity, the announcements depicting a special mint have been removed. However, some users may still see the message and will need to restart Discord. In addition, the Axie Infinity team stated:
The team will continue to update its users on the incident via Twitter, Discord, Substack, and Facebook at the same time.
According to MEE6 official support, MEE6 was not hacked, but server admins were compromised, allowing attackers to use MEE6 features to post messages.
The Axie Infinity team and community are reeling from the recent Ronin bridge hack, in which $625 million was stolen. The play-to-earn game’s popularity has plummeted, with many top players abandoning Axie Infinity.
According to Discord security experts, the hackers most likely attacked admin accounts first to create a reaction role feature from MEE6 that allows an alternate account admin. Attackers use the method to send webbook messages while concealing the compromised administrator account. Rather than attempting to identify the compromised account, the best solution is to remove MEE6/the webbooks immediately.
The Inflection Point of Axie Infinity
The Axie Infinity project appears to be failing as delays and hacks have taken their toll on the developers. The Axie Infinity community has been outraged by the delays in releasing Land and game rewards. Many players have even left the game as the project is still being hacked. In just 6 months, the price of AXS tokens has fallen from a high of $160 to $20.
