The majority of Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong’s old tweets have been deleted from Twitter, and the WayBackMachine, a digital archive of the web, has also removed his tweets from its records.
Brian Armstrong is the CEO of Coinbase, one of the world’s largest and most popular cryptocurrency platforms. He has been active on Twitter since 2011, sharing his views and opinions on various crypto and Coinbase-related topics.
However, recently, he has deleted most of his old tweets, leaving only a few from 2021.
In addition, the WayBackMachine, a website that archives web pages and content, has also deleted its archive of Armstrong’s tweets, making it harder to access his previous posts.
This has sparked curiosity and speculation among some crypto enthusiasts, who wonder why Armstrong decided to erase his digital footprint.
Some have linked this to the ongoing regulatory scrutiny that Coinbase is facing from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and other authorities.
Coinbase vs. SEC: The Lend Saga
Coinbase has been in a public dispute with the SEC over its plans to launch Lend, a lending product that would allow users to earn interest on their crypto holdings.
The SEC has threatened to sue Coinbase if it launches Lend, claiming it would violate securities laws.
Coinbase contests the classification of Lend as a security by the SEC and criticizes the lack of clear guidance from the regulatory body.
The company accuses the SEC of exhibiting hostility and unfairness towards the crypto industry.
Additionally, Coinbase has encountered regulatory obstacles in various jurisdictions, such as the suspension of services in Germany due to a licensing matter and the need to adhere to new tax reporting regulations in South Korea and Ireland.
Crypto CEOs’ and Tweet Wipeouts
Armstrong is one of many crypto CEOs to delete his old tweets. In 2018, Changpeng Zhao, the CEO of Binance, another major crypto exchange, also deleted most of his tweets from before 2017.
He said that he did this to “reduce noise” and “focus on work.”
However, some crypto CEOs have also faced backlash for their tweets. For example, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has been accused of manipulating the crypto market with his tweets about Bitcoin and Dogecoin.
The SEC also sued him for his tweets about Tesla’s stock price in 2018.
Therefore, some observers speculate that Armstrong deleted his old tweets to avoid potential criticism or legal trouble for his past statements.
However, this is only conjecture, and Armstrong has not publicly commented on his tweet deletion.
