Last Wednesday, a crowdfunding campaign was launched to help fund the production of a feature-length character-driven documentary film about the “innovative real-world uses of the Ethereum blockchain, the die-hard community of enthusiasts and developers, and its creator, Vitalik Buterin.”
The fundraising effort received 662 contributions through Mirror, a decentralized crypto-based network before it ended on Friday. “We are blown away by the community’s response. “We exceeded our goal in three days,” the project’s developers announced.
The film’s production budget will receive 95% of the cash received, while 3% will be awarded as Gitcoin grants to promote open-source Ethereum projects, and the remaining 2% will be donated to Carbonfund.org, a non-profit dedicated to reducing global carbon emissions.
The film, which is set to debut in winter 2023, will treat Ethereum as an “infinite garden,” describing its blockchain as a “decentralized ecosystem with soil, plants, and insects” rather than a “machine managed by a central brain.” Aya Miyaguchi, the Ethereum Foundation’s executive director, came up with the concept of the infinite garden.
The project’s creators released a set of nonfungible tokens (NFTs) attached to certain on-screen credits in the movie. The top three backers received these three one-of-a-kind NFTs created by digital artist Pplpleasr, who has worked on films such as Batman v Superman, Wonder Woman, and Star Trek Beyond.
