The Quantum Computing Challenge
Quantum computers, with their ability to invert elliptic curve multiplications, could potentially expose private keys once a transaction reveals the corresponding public key.
Buterin explains that an Ethereum address is derived from the private key ( k ) using the expression keccak(priv_to_pub(k))[12:], where priv_to_pub represents the elliptic curve multiplication process.
Ethereum’s Four-Step Quantum Countermeasure
Buterin’s proposed countermeasures include:
- Reverting Transactions: Rolling back the blockchain to a pre-attack state to nullify unauthorized transactions.
- Disabling Traditional Transactions: Temporarily halting standard externally owned account (EOA) transactions to prevent further exposure.
- Enabling Smart Contract Wallets: Introducing a new transaction type to facilitate operations from smart contract wallets, enhancing security measures.
- Implementing STARK Proofs: Adding a new transaction type or opcode for users to provide STARK proofs, verifying their knowledge of a private preimage and a public address, thus allowing them to switch to a new, secure validation code for their accounts.
