Maelstrom, an investment fund, has made a grant available to a Bitcoin Core developer, Jon Atack, in recognition of his contributions to the Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIP) repository.
Arthur Hayes, Maelstrom’s chief investment officer, stated in a press release distributed to Cointelegraph that the financial assistance enables Atack to concentrate on his Bitcoin research.
Hayes noted that the fund aims to assist experienced Bitcoin Core developers. The executive stated:
“Jon has complete freedom to work on whichever part of the Bitcoin codebase he likes from any location around the globe. As a senior developer on Bitcoin Core, Jon represents an early adopter and key member of the community.”
Hayes aspires to identify additional grant candidates to assist in educating the next generation of developers within the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Continuous vigilance, review, and revisions are required for Bitcoin.
Atack stated in the announcement that Bitcoin and open-source software are instrumental in pursuing causes such as self-sovereignty, decentralization of power, individual privacy, and human freedom. Nevertheless, there is an ongoing need for network maintenance. Atack elaborated:
“Bitcoin isn’t perfect. Among other things, it needs further decentralization, continued vigilance, review, bug-fixing, updates, maintenance, and improved robustness, performance, privacy, scaling, documentation and user experience.”
Consequently, the developer committed to providing assistance and maintenance to the network, and he stated that he would persist in his efforts to enhance the decentralization and robustness of Bitcoin.
“My primary focus will be on the review and context-packing of proposals for these projects to help advance them and potentially identify game-changing changes, as well as to assist in their maintenance,” Atack stated.
Maelstrom disclosed to Cointelegraph that Atack attained a $100,000 grant. In addition, the developer is receiving an additional grant from the Open Sats Bitcoin initiative.
Maelstrom Bitcoin grant initiative
Maelstrom formally announced the grant program on July 17 to facilitate the advancement of Bitcoin’s development. The grant program provides funding on a 12-month basis, with a maximum of $250,000 per individual developer, spanning from $50,000 to $150,000.
Arthur Hayes underscored the significance of assisting developers in the network’s maintenance during a previous interview with Cointelegraph. The executive stated that the ecosystem may be susceptible to challenges without funding.
