Animoca Brands subsidiary Quidd and Manchester City Football Club have formed a multi-year strategic alliance for creating digital collectibles.
Quidd intends to produce and introduce digital artifacts designated as “special editions,” which will feature cards that grant access to tangible experiences.
In a blog post, City Football Group’s Vice President of Global Partnerships Marketing and Operations, Tom Boyle, announced the partnership and added:
“We’re excited to help transform the traditional football pastime of cards and collectibles in a new digital age alongside Quidd, enabling us to further connect with our fans across the globe. We look forward to working together on creating new digital experiences and games for our fans to enjoy.”
The partnership’s first product will be an exclusive collection of 200 digital player cards. These cards will be available for purchase or launch on May 2. Two exclusive “For the Fans” packets will be awarded to the initial 10,000 “Cityzens” (a colloquial term for Manchester City supporters) who avail themselves of the promotion packs.
In addition to purchasing opportunities such as hospitality tickets and official Manchester City merchandise, City residents who gain access to digital rewards via Quidd packs will be eligible to win “money-can-buy experiences,” which may include an exclusive chance to observe a first-team training session at the City Football Academy.
Recent reports indicate that Manchester City has been active in the NFT space, as evidenced by the April 22 unveiling of its “Unseen City Shirts” NFT collection on the OKX blockchain. Hand-painted physical uniforms are associated with a restricted quantity of Unseen City Shirts NFTs.
The club also collaborated with Sony in 2022 to construct a virtual replica of Man City’s iconic home field, Etihad Stadium, which was reportedly the first officially licensed football stadium built in the metaverse.
Conversely, other organizations are establishing their long-term futures with cryptocurrencies. Peter McCormack, a Bitcoin podcaster, recently enlisted the Winklevoss twins to invest $4.5 million in the Real Bedford Football Club’s Bitcoin treasury. They appear to be optimistic regarding Bitcoin and the club’s potential to qualify for the Premier League in the future.
