The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) has said that the Metaverse could lead to new types of cybercrime and help existing crimes grow on a larger scale.
Interpol says that the Metaverse could bring about new cybercrimes and make current ones worse. People worry about how safe augmented reality is for children. Europol had warned before that terrorist groups could use virtual worlds to find new members and train them.
A report from Reuters says that the countries that are part of Interpol are worried about how to get ready to fight crime in the immersive community. Interpol’s executive director for technology and innovation, Madan Oberoi, said that there are concerns about the safety of children in the augmented reality realms, in addition to the new ways that phishing scams could work.
Oberoi also said that crime in the real world could be made easier with the help of virtual reality. What he said:
If a terror group wants to attack a physical space, they may use [virtual reality] to plan, simulate, and launch their exercises before attacking.
In a separate story, At the 90th Interpol General Assembly, which was held recently in New Delhi, India, the first global police Metaverse was shown for the first time.
According to the press release, the Interpol metaverse will let people visit a virtual copy of the Interpol General Secretariat offices in Lyon, France, regardless of where they are in the world. It will also let police officers talk to each other using avatars and could host training sessions, forensic analysis, and other police functions.
The word “metaverse” became popular in 2021 when investors bet that the settings for virtual worlds would bring a new era to the internet. Facebook, the biggest social networking site, changed its name to Meta to reflect this change. But after the metaverse frenzy, sales of blockchain-based assets like virtual land and other digital assets have dropped by a lot.
