Thirdweb, a startup that offers a Web3 development framework, has appointed former Facebook executive Atif Khan as its new Vice President of Gaming. The company also showcased its capabilities by building a Web3 game from scratch on Base.
Atif Khan is a veteran in the gaming industry, having spent eight years at Facebook, most recently as the Head of Mid-Market & In-App Ads for Global Gaming.
He left Facebook in 2021 and joined Stardust, a Web3 gaming infrastructure firm, as its Chief Operating Officer. Khan joined Thirdweb to head its gaming division and help accelerate the expansion of the Web3 gaming industry.
He said he was attracted by the opportunity to “sell the full stack to a game developer,” as Thirdweb offers a comprehensive toolkit for building decentralized applications, from blockchain games to NFTs, DAOs, and more.
About Thirdweb
Thirdweb is a San Francisco-based startup providing developers with a Web3 development framework.
The company raised a $24 million Series A round at a $160 million valuation in August 2022 from investors, including Haun Ventures, Polygon Labs, Coinbase Ventures, and Shopify.
The company’s toolkit includes SDKs in multiple languages, smart contracts, UI components, data feeds, gasless transactions, fiat on-ramp, decentralized storage, RPC nodes, wallet authentication, and more.
Furthermore, the company aims to simplify the process of building Web3 apps by offering a customizable one-stop-shop solution for developers.
About Web3 Warriors
Thirdweb developed Web3 Warriors from scratch in three weeks to demonstrate its toolkit’s capabilities. The game launched on Base’s testnet, an Ethereum layer-2 network that Coinbase developed. It is an on-chain survival action game.
According to the company, the game attracted over 500 unique players and recorded 1,000 sessions in less than seven days. The game features non-custodial wallets, in-game battle tokens, and cosmetic skins as NFTs on the backend.
The game was also designed to prioritize gameplay familiarity and user enjoyment while incorporating blockchain features subtly.
The company stated that it employed a Trojan horse strategy to introduce Web3 technologies to gamers without overwhelming them with complexity.
