In November 2023, the United Kingdom will host the inaugural international Artificial Intelligence (AI) safety summit. This event places significant emphasis on the potential existential threat that AI presents.
The 1–2 November summit will emphasize the potential existential threat of artificial intelligence, a concern of numerous legislators. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who perceives the United Kingdom as a center for AI safety, has expressed concerns about criminals and terrorists using AI to create weapons of mass destruction.
Sunak will accommodate approximately one hundred guests at Bletchley Park. The distinguished visitors will include Vice President of the United States Kamala Harris, CEO of Google DeepMind Demis Hassabis, and a group of legislators, AI visionaries, and academics.
The summit’s purpose is to initiate a global discourse on AI regulation, as the U.K. government released the agenda for the event this week, which includes discussions about the unpredictability of technological advancement and the risk of human control loss.
A group of influential parliamentarians in the United Kingdom had previously advised the government to collaborate with democratic allies to address the potential misuse of artificial intelligence, underscoring London’s desire to be a leader in developing emerging technology.
In the weeks following Sunak’s summit announcement, Google published an analysis predicting that further investment in AI would boost Britain’s economy by $488 billion by 2030. OpenAI announced it would establish its first office outside the United States in London.
Sunak spent 100 million pounds ($130 million) in August 2023 to acquire thousands of computer processors to power artificial intelligence amidst a global shortage and race for computing power.
