Representatives Chrissy Houlahan and French Hill of the United States have demanded that Tigran Gambaryan be freed from prison in Nigeria.
The Binance executive is presently being charged with major money laundering, allegedly because of his affiliation with the international cryptocurrency exchange Binance.
Hill said Gambaryan had lost weight and was not receiving proper medical care. He claimed that Gambaryan had double pneumonia and malaria. Hill said:
“Tigran must be immediately granted a humanitarian release, the remaining charges dropped, and he must return home to America where he belongs”
Representatives Hill (Republican) of Arkansas and Houlahan (Democrat) of Pennsylvania were in the nation to talk about counterterrorism initiatives. Because of the circumstances surrounding Gambaryan’s imprisonment and health, Hill hoped the American embassy would return his release.
Nigeria is still holding Gambaryan despite the country having dropped the tax allegations against the two Binance executives last week.
Letter to President Biden
Politicians in the US requested President Joe Biden to start the process of freeing the arrested Binance executive on June 4. The majority of the congressmen who signed the letter addressed it to Secretary Antony Blinken, the president, and Roger D. Carstens, the presidential envoy for hostage affairs. The lawmakers expressed their worries in the Nigerian government’s letter on Gambaryan’s “wrongful detention.”
“We fear for his life. Immediate action is essential to ensure his safety and preservice his life. We must act swiftly before it is too late,” the lawmakers wrote.
Background Story
The Nigerian government detained and accused Binance executives Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwall of criminal offenses in February. Anjarwall escaped from detention and was extradited from Kenya to Nigeria, while Gambaryan is awaiting trial.
The two traveled to Nigeria to speak with officials about Binance’s regulatory concerns and the government’s recent crackdown on cryptocurrency trading platforms.
After the negotiations, they were taken into custody, and their passports confiscated by the authorities. Binance has been attempting to persuade Nigerian authorities that Gambaryan needs more organizational decision-making power. They have maintained that he ought to be freed and not have to appear in court on any charges.
