World Cup Bets Smash Records, Hit $20B Prediction Volume

Chainalysis Confirms Record Prediction Market Volume Surge

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, held across North America in June and July, generated a record $20 billion in prediction market volume, blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis reported on Thursday, July 30, 2026, with the figure encompassing activity across nearly 400,000 wallets starting in January 2026 and $5.7 billion generated during the tournament itself. Markets covered everything from the tournament's eventual winner to lighter fare, including whether Portugal legend Cristiano Ronaldo would cry when his team was eliminated, which he did.

Kalshi and Polymarket Lead World Cup Betting Volume Race

Kalshi and Polymarket combined for roughly $19 billion in notional trading volume during the tournament, surpassing the entire U.S. legal sportsbook handle for June and July 2026, which ranged between $3 billion and $4 billion. Kalshi led with $13.6 billion in World Cup-related trades, more than double Polymarket's $5.4 billion, while Polymarket's outright tournament-winner market alone closed at a record $4.23 billion, eclipsing its previous high set during the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

World Cup Prediction Volume Dwarfs 2024 Election Betting

The tournament represented by far the biggest prediction market event on record, shattering the $3.6 billion traded during the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Polymarket was valued at $15 billion during funding talks in April, while rival Kalshi is reportedly targeting a $40 billion valuation in its latest investment round.

The World Cup's volume surge cements prediction markets as a mainstream alternative to traditional sportsbooks, likely accelerating investor interest in both platforms' next funding rounds.

With Kalshi and Polymarket both eyeing higher valuations, upcoming events like the 2026 midterm elections could test whether this volume growth is sustainable beyond marquee sporting events. Sportico analysts noted Kalshi maintained roughly 83% of notional volume among CFTC-approved exchanges throughout the tournament, extending a dominant streak in its two-year run toward a valuation above $20 billion.
