Worldcoin has introduced “World ID 2.0,” an updated version of its World ID function, and has integrated it into apps including Shopify, Minecraft, Reddit, Mercado Libre, and Telegram.
The announcement stated that the new app integrations, including Discord, Talent Protocol, and Okta’s Auth0, supplement those already in place. Additionally, the latest iteration grants application developers the ability to select from an array of authentication levels from “lite” to “max.”
Users can demonstrate their humanity on these platforms by integrating the new version with Reddit, Shopify, Mercado Libre, and Telegram.
As stated in the announcement, the purpose of these additional tiers is to “enable users to utilize their World ID in a greater variety of ways, contingent upon the security requirements of the application, while also ensuring that users do not disclose more information than is necessary or desired for a particular application.”
For instance, an application that prioritizes security may necessitate users to possess an orb-verified ID, while applications that prioritize convenience may solely demand a “Device Auth” World ID associated with the user’s mobile device.
According to Worldcoin, the new functionalities will aid in mitigating losses caused by malware while eliminating the need for users to divulge personal information to the applications they are utilizing. It claimed, citing a CNBC report, that retailers lose $100 billion annually due to “return fraud, bots, and coupon stacking.”
July marked the debut of Worldcoin. Its most secure authentication method, which scans an individual’s iris and generates a zero-knowledge proof of the scan, has generated controversy.
Critics assert that this process increases the risk of biometric information leakage. Worldcoin has provided a defense for the practice, asserting that it solely retains the evidence of the retinal scan and not the actual scan itself.
