Axie Infinity creators were given a breath of fresh air when Binance announced that it had recovered part of the stolen cash, giving victims a ray of optimism.
Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) took to Twitter to announce that the Lazarus Group has recovered $5.8 million from 86 accounts on the exchange. As of press time, the primary wallet linked to the hackers held almost $280 million in ETH.
According to data from blockchain security firm Elliptics, hackers have been sending assets to CEXs using decentralized crypto mixers like Tornado Cash, as well as swapping a portion of the stolen USDC for Ether on DEXs.
DEXs and mixers are beginning to take steps to prohibit dangerous actors that seek to profit from their anonymity, thanks to attacks like Axie Infinity. TRM Labs’ blockchain intelligence is currently being used by Uniswap to screen addresses associated with criminal operations.
