Popular artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT’s worldwide traffic decreased from May to June, indicating a decline in interest in the OpenAI-created AI assistant tool.
Similarweb estimates that desktop and mobile web traffic for ChatGPT decreased by 9.7 percent in June. In addition, the number of distinct visitors and time spent on the site has reduced by 5.7% and 8.5%, respectively. The website’s traffic decreased by 10.3% month-over-month in the United States.
Despite the decline in traffic, the website remains ahead of Google’s Bard, Microsoft’s Bing, and Character AI, a prominent AI-powered chatbot that is also a competitor.
As the data was released, some speculated that the decline could result from students on summer break using the website and the novelty of the AI chatbot wearing off.
On the other hand, a community member disputed the reasons for the decline because they did not account for the traffic generated by the recently released iOS application for the AI chatbot. According to the Twitter user, there may be a simple “change in how ChatGPT is accessed.”
On May 18, OpenAI launched the iOS mobile application for ChatGPT. The company initially released the application in the United States and pledged to expand the rollout to other nations in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, Lighting Labs, the company behind the Bitcoin Lightning Network, has announced layer-2 tools for AI to transmit and receive Bitcoin. The company released the toolkit to facilitate quicker, cheaper, and simpler payments for AI-focused project developers.
