Decentraland’s X account has been hacked; the assailants are disseminating a phishing link disguised as a MANA token airdrop to deceive the social media followers of the virtual reality (VR) platform.
The link directs users to a website that requests that they connect their wallets to claim the token airdrop. Subsequently, their funds are compromised.
PeckShield’s Warning
The blockchain security firm has recommended that users refrain from engaging with the official Decentraland account by not following the link or engaging with related content.
PeckShield advises users to anticipate additional notifications from the VR platform’s social media account to verify that account security has been restored.
Crypto fraudsters breached numerous high-profile social media accounts on Sept. 18, demonstrating that this method of social media breach is becoming a recurring trend.
Takeover of the Decentraland account
The scam pronouncements commenced at 01:50 am UTC on Sept. 19, with the announcement of the MANA airdrop allocation for Decentraland’s community on X and the subsequent pinning of the post.
The bad actor commented on the scam announcement (and subsequent announcements) that comments were disabled “due to malicious links” to further reinforce the disguised scam.
On Sept. 18, at approximately 10:00 pm UTC, the VR platform’s social media page published its most recent post, which featured its community’s fashion preferences.
Tips for avoiding scams
In an exclusive interview with Cointelegraph on Sept. 12, Kitboga, renowned for his antics of wasting fraudsters’ time, provided advice on how to avoid the tactics of scammers.
He clarified that the sole thing that all scammers do is “create a sense of urgency,” which should be addressed with a measured response to prevent becoming a victim.
In the event of the reported hijacking of the VR platform’s X account, Decentraland adherents should adopt Kitboga’s recommendation and exercise caution in their decision-making.
