A major operation by the Anti-Kidnapping Department (DAS) of Paraguay resulted in the recovery of 300 Bitcoin mining rigs stolen from a farm in April.
In the province of Alto Paraná, a group of hooded individuals attacked a Bitcoin mining farm and overpowered its manager. After which, they fled with 492 mining rigs, leaving behind chaos and destruction.
The DAS launched an investigation and subsequently located some of the stolen equipment. When they raided a commercial property in Presidente Franco, they discovered 300 mining rigs connected to power outlets and the internet.
In addition, they confiscated mobile phones, firearms, and ammunition from the property. A man was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault.
A Hotspot for Bitcoin Mining
Paraguay has become a popular destination for Bitcoin mining due to its surplus of hydroelectric power. The country hosts one of the largest dams in the world, the Itaipú Dam, which provides cheap and abundant electricity for miners.
In recent years, numerous miners from China and other nations have relocated to Paraguay to exploit its favourable conditions. Some politicians in the country have also expressed support for Bitcoin and proposed bills to regulate and promote its adoption.
However, the president of Paraguay has opposed these initiatives and vetoed several crypto-mining and trading-related legislation.
The Search Continues
The DAS reported they are still searching for the remaining 192 mining rigs stolen from the farm.
Additionally, they requested that anyone with information about the theft contact them.
The DAS also warned that Bitcoin mining is risky and requires proper security measures and legal compliance. They suggested that miners register their equipment and operations with the authorities to avoid becoming targets of criminals.
