The Swiss city of Lugano has made it legal to pay taxes and municipal services with cryptocurrencies, such as Tether and Bitcoin.
Due to Lugano’s decision, automated payments can be made through Bitcoin Suisse, a Swiss institutional-grade cryptocurrency platform. With this new method, residents and businesses can use cryptocurrency to pay any amount for local services or taxes.
Using the Swiss QR-bill, which allows payments through mobile wallets and some cryptocurrencies, is a practical implementation. This project is a component of Lugano’s larger “Plan B” strategy, a joint effort with Tether that aims to transform the city’s financial system through Bitcoin technology.
With the integration of payment options for tax collection and other municipal services, Bitcoin Suisse is an essential technological partner. In March 2022, Lugano started embracing digital money through a partnership with Tether.
The city has been investigating blockchain technology through several projects, including the MyLugano app, the LVGA Points payment token, the Lugano digital franc, and the 3Achain blockchain infrastructure.
In Switzerland, Lugano is not an isolated instance. In cooperation with Bitcoin Suisse, the Swiss canton of Zug and the town of Zermatt have already included Bitcoin into their financial operations. As of 2020, they will accept it for tax payments and in 2021, respectively.
