Vodafone, a British telecommunications company, is apparently planning to auction the world’s first Short Message Service (SMS) as NFT on December 21. The proceedings from the sale will be used as charity to help refugees across the globe.
The “Merry Christmas” SMS was sent 29 years ago on December 3, 1992, via the Vodafone network and received by Richard Jarvis, a Vodafone employee at the time.
According to Romanian news outlet Ziarul Financiar, the historic 15-character SMS will be auctioned off as an NFT in a one-time sale by the Aguttes Auction House in France.
Vodafone plans to donate the proceeds from the auction of the world’s first SMS in the form of NFT to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to aid forcibly displaced individuals.

Vodafone’s SMS NFT sale will be placed on Tuesday, December 21st, through an online auction in which participants can put bids using Ethereum (ETH).
The communication technology that was utilized to send the world’s first SMS will be exclusively owned by the highest bidder.
To add to the SMS’s splendour, rival networks needed nine years to catch up to Vodafone’s ability to send and receive SMS. Another example of NFT’s capacity to tokenize and digitally preserve history is the minting of the world’s first SMS.
NFTs adoption by Businesses
The NFT ecosystem has accelerated crypto’s mainstream adoption as businesses look for ways to incorporate it into their existing business strategies. Adidas just announced the debut of an “Into the Metaverse” NFT collection.
According to reports, the Adidas Originals NFT sale will take place on the company’s official website on December 17 for 0.2 ETH, which is currently worth $810 at the time of writing.
Nike, too, purchased RTFKT, a virtual footwear and collectibles firm, just days before Adidas’ arrival, indicating a major interest in the metaverse.
