The series, dubbed Masterminds of Hip Hop, will be available exclusively on TOKAU, a leading NFT platform. While the collection is currently available for preview, it will be available for purchase on August 31st.
According to reports, the collection was chosen by Def Jam Records founder Russell Simmons and hip hop legend Snoop Dogg.
Masterminds of Hip Hop will contain recordings and artwork from a variety of artists who contributed to develop and create the hip hop music industry that has never been seen or heard before.
Among the artists are Public Enemy’s Chuck D, Big Daddy Kane, MC Lyte, Nikki D, and Doug E. Fresh, to mention a few.
The collection, according to Russell Simmons, “aims to give credit back to the cultural movement’s original fathers.”
This may be the first NFT compilation dedicated to hip hop’s forefathers, but it’s far from the first time the music industry has embraced NFTs.
Music, like sport and literature, jumped on the NFT bandwagon when the industry was booming at the start of the year.
Since then, musicians from various walks of life have worked hard to obtain a piece of the NFT pie, from symphonic orchestras to heavy metal legends.
Sony Music and rap legend Eminem took part in the latest round of funding for NFT marketplace MakersPlace earlier this month. In this most recent round, the platform raised a total of $30 million.
A recording of Claude Debussy’s masterwork Clair de Lune was also the first music-based NFT to orbit Earth. The digital file, which was also coined as an NFT, orbited the globe for roughly 90 minutes after being sent to and from the International Space Station.
He stated, “I frequently think about the early days of pre-recorded hip hop when it was just a performance act.” There were rappers and DJs who pioneered the space and popularized it to the point that rap artists’ recording became a necessity.
“None of them has received the recognition that I believe they deserve, and this is my opportunity to revisit and thank these incredible artists while they are still alive.”
There will be two phases to the collection: pre-recorded and early recording. As a result, the Masterminds of Hip Hop series will include a total of 40 different NFTs.
