TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew vows to challenge and defeat the U.S. ban, aiming to preserve the popular short video app, utilized by 170 million Americans.
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew has assured users of the application that the company will combat and overcome the U.S. ban. The CEO of the social media company reportedly told Reuters that the organization expects to prevail in a legal dispute to rescind a bill signed into law by President Joe Biden.
There are 170 million users of the company’s renowned short video application in the United States; the current moratorium would render it illegal.
Additionally, Reuters notes that after Biden signed the bill, CEO Shou Zi Chew stated in a video that ByteDance, based in China, had 270 days to liquidate its American assets or face prohibition.
“Rest assured—we aren’t going anywhere,” Chew said. “The facts and the Constitution are on our side and we expect to prevail again.”
The statement by the CEO of TikTok follows the earlier approval of a bill by U.S. President Joe Biden that mandates the Chinese company ByteDance, the proprietor of TikTok, to divest its ownership in the application within one year from the date the legislation was established.
In the context of a comprehensive legislative bundle encompassing sanctions relief for Israel and Ukraine, the social media platform that contravenes the aforementioned regulations could potentially encounter a ban from the United States. Following the House’s resounding vote over the weekend, the Senate approved the final cut by a vote of 79–18.
An additional stipulation within the legislation grants ByteDance a period of nine months to locate a purchaser for TikTok. After that, ninety days are permitted following the completion of the transaction.
If not, Google Play and the App Store will prohibit using the TikTok app in the United States. Huawei has taken this course of action due to its national security and data protection concerns, which are intertwined with its allegiance to China.
